Lake Tahoe and Crater Lake
Once we arrived in Tahoe, we wandered around and got a good view of the beautiful lake with the clear water and the mountains in the distance. We walked down to the marina to see if we could go kayaking for an hour or so before our boat tour. The kayak rentals were just closing right when we got there . So, we walked over to the Safeway grocery store and got groceries for the next few days. After we dropped our food off at the RV, we decided to go swimming at the little beach across from our RV park (Campground by the Lake) on Lake Tahoe. Only Owen got in because everyone else thought it would be too cold, and the water looked a little muddy along the edge.
After swimming, we walked back to the RV and changed into our clothes and called an Uber to get to our boat tour with Rum Runner Cruises! We got to the dock 30 minutes early and got drinks at the restaurant after discovering that we would be the only ones on our boat! We boarded our private boat tour and set off to Emerald Cove. The views were amazing, and we spent about an hour and a half touring part of the lake with our tour guide, Jen. It was awesome!
We took an Uber back to the RV park and made tacos and beans for dinner. Part way through making dinner, we realized we didn’t have a can opener to open the beans! So, Owen asked our “neighbors” and they gladly lent us theirs. After enjoying a delicious dinner, we took showers in the tiny RV shower. HB and Kacie made some coin toss bets that kept Owen and Presley entertained. Next, we enjoyed watching some “Friday Night Lights” on the computer, before drifting off to sleep.
Friday, July 3
We left our Lake Tahoe RV Park around 9am and started our 6-hour journey to Crater Lake (our longest drive of the trip). We stopped at a random turnoff on the side of the road and made lunch (grilled cheese with turkey) using the generator on the RV. One of the many perks of cruising with the RV – we always have food, running water, a stove, microwave (and the bullet blender that we brought) and all of our clothes with us!
We drove through some beautiful spots in Northern California and Southern Oregon, including Klamath Falls.
We arrived at our RV Park just outside of Crater Lake (Crater Lake Resort) and checked out the pretty scenery right there at the park – our parking spot was even right on the stream.

We then got on a couple of the canoes that the RV park provides gratis and cruised up and down the stream.
After Facetiming with a few different friends and family members and doing some 4th of July nail painting, Owen and Kacie built up the fire for us for our dinner – pork chops, corn on the cob and potatoes.
We then tried a new campfire dessert – we took bananas, sliced open, topped with toppings of your choice (marshmallows, peanut butter, chocolate chips, graham crackers), wrapped them in tin foil and threw them on the fire for about 5 minutes. SO GOOD! And a bit healthier than s’mores.
Saturday, July 4
Took off from our campsite and headed over to Crater Lake for a hike up Garfield Peak. The hike was about 3 ½ miles round-trip. Unfortunately, the last ¼ of the trail was closed. That, however, didn’t stop a lot of people from hiking up to the top anyway. HB and Kacie decided to wait it out by the closed sign. Presley, Owen and Merrie decided to press their luck and hike over a bit of snow. The first patch of snow wasn’t too bad. However, the second patch looked a bit daunting, so P and M let Owen hike the rest of the way on his own .
Crater Lake was absolutely beautiful. The water is incredibly blue and clear. After our hike we drove around the western side of the lake, stopped on the side of the road with a beautiful view of the lake and had lunch in our RV before heading out through the northern entrance.
From there, it was on to Bend, OR.
